Alcoa Q3 2009 Earnings Report Summary

Alcoa surprised Wall Street by reporting a profit for the most recent quarter after three consecutive quarterly losses, and it turned in a revenue number that topped expectations.

The maker of aluminum products and component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average reported a surprise profit of 4 cents a share in the third quarter, excluding one-time items, compared with a profit of 37 cents a share in the same period last year.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Alcoa to report a loss of 9 cents a share.

Sales reached $4.62 billion in the most recent quarter, below the $7.234 billion from this time last year, but ahead of analysts' $4.551 billion forecast.

Also shares leaped more than 5 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday.

The shares finished the day's regular session at $14.20, up 2.23 percent, in New York Stock Exchange trade.

Speaking to CNBC, Alcoa Chief Executive Officer Klaus Kleinfeld credited a stronger balance sheet and a resurgent Chinese economy for the company's results.

"We turned the crisis into a real opportunity, we strengthened our cost structure, strengthened our balance sheet," Kleinfeld said. "China clearly is back and back very, very strong and pulling some of the Asian markets."

The executive added that he sees the global aluminum market expanding by 11 percent in the year's second half, thanks largely to a rebounding car market. He said US demand is stabilizing.

"Not only have we been fulfilling our promises but we’ve pretty much been exceeding all of the targets at this point in time," Kleinfeld said.

Alcoa revealed in its quarterly results that it currently holds $1.1 billion in cash. Kleinfeld would not openly speculate on where, if anywhere, he might put that cash to work but said it gives Alcoa a lot of opportunities, given the unprecedented nature of the global economic crisis.

Kleinfeld said Alcoa is closely monitoring energy prices and the weakening dollar—especially the greenback's standing against the Brazilian Real and Australian Dollar.

The economic downturn since September affected most of Alcoa's end markets—automotive, commercial transportation, building and construction, and aerospace.

But in July, Kleinfeld said there were signs that weak aluminum demand—which has prompted production cuts and plummeting metals prices in the last year—might be easing.

Alcoa is the first company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to report third-quarter earnings and is usually watched as an early indicator on industrial and manufacturing earnings.

About Me

My photo
My name is Eric Katsov and I work at StockRing.com. This blog is to reflect the latest developments that we observe on the stock market from StockRing point of view. StockRing developed unique risk evaluation technology that allows to minimize losses for large diversified portfolios of stocks and mutual funds via weekly portfolio monitoring. StockRing clients receive Weekly Status Reports with Buy-Sell-Hold ratings assigned to all their stocks and mutual funds. StockRing serves a lot of 401k and 403b clients who are limited to investing into just a few of mutual funds and StockRing sends Weekly 401K Status Reports to help clients to chose the best funds to invest in.
